We are currently sharing our first Diwali celebrations in Austin using a storytelling workshop for kids. Families and kids are loving this Ramleela-inspired show. We partnered with Austin Public Library’s Hampton and Spicewood Springs branch to showcase a story from our story and Diwali coloring book for kids- Ravan’s Lost Boon. This workshop and cultural event can come to all schools, libraries, and teams. If you’re trying to bring in Diwali storytelling to your organizations and create engagement, reach us pronto!

The event was participatory and specifically used inspiration from a couple of oral storytelling traditions from South-Asia: Ramleela and Nukkad Nataks. The event had props for kids who volunteered regardless of any prior preparation. There was music, movement, and a unique story to connect it all together. After the story, kids tried coloring, crafts, and even Rangoli making. Our approach and goal is always for kids to learn something new and build curiosity to know more. Some of them who had South-Asian heritage already knew about Diwali and were eager to share and participate. Many kids who learned the story for the first time were fully engaged and a little surprised too :-). Some feedback we received is here.

We are going to host a couple more sessions of the Diwali storytelling event in schools and libraries around town. If you’re in Austin and want to invite us for a lunch and learn, or a Diwali storytelling session for kids or adults, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Thank you to all those who came for the experience. We would love to pass on a special thanks to the parents, librarians and teachers because they made the events happen all around Austin. And for sure, we have more to go soon! If you’re not in Austin, we can host a virtual meeting over Zoom. Basically, you just us know if it is of interest and we can make it happen.

Lastly, here are some images from Valley View Elementary, Austin Public Library, and at our Katha workshop backstage :-).
