With the international women’s day coming up, we are excited to present Gender and Belonging as our March theme. We have a list of South-Asia-inspired events and stories for you. This month all of our content will focus on this theme. Our maker box members will receive their story toolkit on this theme. We are kicking off the month with a folk story from the North East of India, with the story of Jayamala, the queen of the Elephants.

Here are all the things to expect during March:

Maker Box Toolkit:

Our maker box is an activity box created for families and kids (6-14 years). On the theme of gender and belonging, they will receive – children’s book, Shakti Girls by Shetal Shah, a postcard to make their own thank YOU card, an audio story, a Holi Quiz, book recommendations by age, a word game, StoryTime and more ! Whoa 🙂 We ship from March 7th and you can get boxes on all our in-person events too.

New Holi Book: Prahlad and Nida Learn About Holi

Our Holi toolkit is now available for you to bring home. You can find it online here. This is a comic book styled work set in Austin where our leads, Prahlad and Nida learn about the festival of Holi and celebrate it with their friends! You will also learn how to make your own colors.

Peerbagh at SXSW, March 5:

Peerbagh is a semi-finalist at SXSW Edu and we will be presenting our work on March 5th. If you are around, come say hello!

Holi Toolkit at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, March 8:

We will be discussing Holi and some values around the festival and its main characters from our book, Prahlad and Nida Learn About Holi. This event is for middle schoolers at St Andrew’s. To invite us to your school, sign up here.

Varta at Austin: A South-Asian Storytelling Festival, March 23:

Come, visit us at the Austin Public Library’s Hampton branch to celebrate a South-Asian inspired storytelling festival. We meet authors, filmmakers, creatives, book highlights, and a South-Asian storytelling exhibit. We will also see puppets, book launches, and a Dastangoi-inspired storytelling performance by local kids. The event is FREE to attend for families

Holi storytelling at Moonsoon dance studio, Austin, March 24:

Join us for a Holi storytelling performance and coloring at Monsoon Dance Studio in North Austin. You can simply come by!

StoryTime celebrating South-Asian women, March 30:

Join our March StoryTime online at 9am CT or 7:30pm India on March 30th. It is open for ages 8+ and kids will learn a new story, and share their creative ideas in workshop settings. It’s FREE for maker box members and $20 for non-members.

Dastaan for March on Gender and Belonging

We bring you a story about Jayamala, the queen of elephants from North-East India. Each month we release one folk audio story for kids.

Writing contest for kids and winning students

Our writing competitions for 2024 are now open for submissions. The theme for Spring is “a place where I belong.” You can submit a 1000-word story. Illustrations and drawings are welcome.

And now for the winners of the winter story competition on the theme of “winter-sun” here are our top three.
